Highlights

Mharakurwa and others were the first to show the proof of concept for PCR detection of Plasmodium falciparum malaria infection using human saliva samples. He is now in a collaborative project transferring his bench-top assay to a point of care malaria test that uses saliva, rather than blood. A non-invasive malaria test could bring malaria diagnosis to grass-root level where the disease predominates, in addition to enhancing community participation in epidemiological surveys for asymptomatic and gametocyte carrier foci. This would aid in strengthening malaria control and elimination.
