Background and Purpose

  • The Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute (JHMRI) was established for the generation of basic knowledge on the malaria parasite, human host, mosquito vector and their interactions in order to provide the tools necessary for effective malaria treatment, prevention and control in the future.

  • The Fellowship program was established to provide a maximum of two years fellowship and health insurance support for pre-doctoral and post-doctoral fellows interested in malaria research, and to provide short-term training fellowships exclusively for scientists from malaria-endemic countries for specialized training on a small project with the JHMRI faculty.

  • Four (4) pre-doctoral and three (3) post-doctoral fellowships may be awarded per calendar year (January 1st –December 31st).

  • Five (5) scientists from malaria-endemic areas may be awarded per year for a maximum duration of 90 days

Eligibility criteria

  • Pre-doctoral fellowships: Duly admitted by the departments of various faculty members affiliated with the JHMRI are eligible to apply for these fellowships. Fellows must have satisfied all the requirements of coursework, laboratory rotations and departmental/school qualifying examinations. (PhD candidates)

  • Post-doctoral fellowshipsinterested in joining or currently in a JHMRI faculty member’s laboratory with less than 3 years post-doctoral experience are eligible to apply.

  • Qualified scientists from malaria-endemic areas will contact JHMRI faculty directly. Malaria-endemic area scientist applications will follow the standard guidelines for submission and review and may be submitted as needed throughout the year.

  • *Please note: Only a single fellowship (either pre-doctoral or post-doctoral) will be awarded to any given Principal Investigator in a calendar year.

Financial Support:

Pre-doctoral and Post-doctoral fellows will receive the following support from JHMRI:

  • stipend per NRSA guidelines for a maximum of two years

  • health insurance for the awardee

  • total travel support of $1,250 to present a paper/poster at a national or international meeting once during the duration of the fellowship

  • Second year funding is strictly dependent upon performance and research achievements during first year funding. 


Malaria-endemic (short-term) fellows will receive the following support from JHMRI for a maximum duration of 90 days:

  • economy class airfare, up to $2,000, for round-trip travel to and from Johns Hopkins University

  • health insurance coverage up to $200 per month

  • living expenses of $2,000 per month and research expenses of $1,000 per month will be given to the JHMRI host laboratory  

application procedure:

A Letter of Intent to submit must be received by June 15th for pre-doctoral and post-doctoral applications.

Pre-doctoral applications must include:

  • 2-3 page description of proposed research plan (specific aims, long-term objectives, and brief background) including the candidate’s chosen thesis topic. Please note that candidate’s thesis topic will be the basis for financial consideration. It is strongly suggested that the candidate discuss this research with a faculty member prior to submission
  1. completed copy of the JHMRI Fellowship Information Sheet/Checklist

  2. unofficial copy of undergraduate transcripts from departmental file

  3. complete CV listing of all abstracts and publications/poster presentations

  4. brief description of prior research experience

  5. two letters of recommendation; one letter must be provided from the candidate’s current advisor - letters must be in a sealed envelope

  6. JHMRI faculty advisor statement of support

  7. faculty advisor’s full NIH biosketch

Post-doctoral applications must include:

  1. 2-3 page description of proposed research plan (specific aims, long-term objectives, and brief background). It is strongly suggested that the candidate discuss this research with a faculty member prior to submission

applications evaluation

All applications will be evaluated by a Review Committee consisting of three or four JHMRI and non-JHMRI faculty members.  The number of fellowships awarded for a given period will be determined by consensus of the Final Review Committee which will consist of the Review Committee, Director of JHMRI, and Deputy Directors of JHMRI. The number of fellowships awarded may range from zero to the maximum number of awards available at that time.

All applicants will receive written evaluations of their proposals.  Applications not approved may be resubmitted only one additional time at the next submission date and should address the reviewers’ comments.

Reporting Requirements

All regular term pre-doctoral and post-doctoral fellows supported by the JHMRI funds are expected to present their research work (paper/poster) at the JHMRI annual meeting OR at the MMI annual retreat.  Please use the JHMRI Fellowship Progress Report Form.

 First Year Progress Report is due on December 1st and should include:

  • progress based on the research plan outlined in the initial application

  • copy of abstracts presented at any meetings during first year funding period

  • copy of any published, accepted, or submitted papers produced during first year funding period

publications and presentations must acknowledge the Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute and the Bloomberg Family Foundation

Final Progress Report is due at the end of your second year (December 31st) and should include:

  • description of progress for the entire two-year fellowship period

  • copies of abstract of presented at  any meeting during fellowship period

  • copies of all published, accepted, or submitted papers produced during fellowship

  • publications and presentations must acknowledge the Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute and the Bloomberg Family Foundation
